malignant melanoma
Note the variable colours, lack of symmetry and irregular edge to this melanoma. To the trained dermatologist, this is clearly a melanoma which needs to be removed as a matter of urgency. Laboratory tests are performed on all moles removed.

Early malignant melanoma
Dermatoscopic image of an early melanoma. Note that the mole is darker on one side than the other, indicating loss of symmetry, which may be an early sign of change in a mole. This mole was removed urgently and proven to be a melanoma on laboratory testing.

Early malignant melanoma
Early malignant melanoma. Note the flat, dark area developing within the light brown mole. The right hand border of the mole is also notched.
-
Early malignant melanoma
This light brown mole has a new, dark, raised area within. Elevation is one of the most imporatant features of melnaoma in the ABCDE method of assessming moles.

melanoma red brown.jpg
Not all malignant melanoma are dark or black. This one has a reddish brown discoloration. In this dermatoscopic image, the red indicates new blood vessels growing into the mole, and the brown indicates the patchy pigmentation of the mole.

Basal cell carcinoma
Pearlescent nodule with a central crater. This is a low risk form of skin cancer. Although it will not harm general health, it needs to be removed to prevent local damage to the skin and underlying structures
-
squamous cell carcinoma
Shouldered nodule with central plug of dead skin (keratin) on the left temple

melanoma on back.jpg
This melanoma was found during a full skin examination. Often, the mole that the patient wants to show the doctor is not the most important mole, so a full skin examination is recommended. This mole has a light brown background, with thickening of the pigment network which has become darker in areas. Black dots can be seen, and also some pale grey scar like areas. At the inferior border, there is some radial streaming.
